July Birthday Celebration for Cadets

A happy belated birthday to all whose birthday fell on July. All of us all here at NPCC wish all the best for you and hope that you excel not only in your academics but also in your CCA and life. For the cadets, remember that this is just the beginning of your journey so give it your best to build a solid foundation that will definitely benefit you when you grow up.

For the CLs and CIs, your contributions and dedication is definitely important in improving our unit so thank you for that. For the TOs, the time you have all spent on this unit in spite of your busy schedules is something us cadets will never forget. Once again, happy belated birthday and all the best. Ora et Labora.

Saint Joseph's Institution's 163rd Annual Parade

The Saint Joseph’s Institution 163rd school's Annual Parade. This event not only marks an important time for all UGs, it also acts to bid farewell and welcome to the next batch of CLs. Our Annual Parade is another sign that another year has passed and a new one has begun.

It serves as a wakeup call to all of us, to take upon new responsibilities, to mature and to rise up to the occasion. This year, we witnessed a spectacular display of drills by all of our UGs and they serve as a role model for us to follow and emulate so that next year's AP will be just as good.

Overseas Educational Visit

Every year, NPCC holds an Overseas Education Visit (OEV) to nearby countries. This year, Cadet Samuel Chang was given the opportunity to attend the event which was a 5 day educational visit to Hong Kong. Along with cadets from other schools, the Hong Kong OEV group visited tourist locations as well as places affiliated with the Hong Kong Police. Unlike ordinary tourist, the cadets were introduced to the Hong Kong Police on what they did as well as how they operated. Several lucky cadets were given the opportunity of using the equipment of the Hong Kong Police. For Samuel, it was a memorable and truly meaningful experience for him as he benefitted greatly, learning about the Hong Kong Police as well as making new friends on the trip. In all, the event was a huge success and hopes to see many cadets being interested to join in on future educational visits.

Values In Actions

This year, the SJI NPCC Unit has once again collaborated with the Metropolitan YMCA (MYMCA) on an activity called VIA, Values in Actions.  During the months of July and August, cadets from Secondary 1 to Secondary 3 went to homes of the elderly under the scheme of MYMCA and cleaned them up.

The activity seemed alien to some as they have not cleaned their homes very often but the cadets put their utmost effort into it and completed what was assigned to them. Aside from the fun we had during this VIA, we got to spend time with the elderly and understand their daily struggles. Through this activity, the Unit has bonded even tighter and went past our normal comfort zone together as one fellowship.

2014

Project Scubilion

This year, the SJI NPCC Unit once again collaborated with the Metropolitan YMCA (MYMCA)on a community service project. The project is called Project Scubilion. During the month of December, cadets from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 were tasked to clean the houses of elderly people under the scheme of MYMCA. Despite being only 1 room flats, it was still a challenging task for some. Some groups only had to mop up the place, whereas others had to clear unwanted items and clean up really dusty rooms. However, everyone did it in the spirit of service. The most enjoyable moment of our experience there was chatting with the elderly living in those flats. Just listening to the stories that they tell makes it an enjoyable experience.

Annual Parade

For the 162nd Annual Parade, NPCC's very own Senior Inspector Mark Ngoh was the commanding officer of the parade. The Annual Parade marked the passing out of the Secondary 4 seniors as they prepare for their O levels and the induction of the new Secondary 3 leaders. One of the most prestigious events in SJI, the Annual Parade was to be conducted for the first time in the new holding campus in Bishan ITE.  Thus, many hours of training were dedicated to ensure that the parade would run smoothly. In the last few weeks before the parade, we had to attend rehearsals for twice or thrice a week. No doubt, this put a substantial amount of pressure on our cadets, especially the Secondary 2s and even selected Secondary 1s. However, their efforts were not wasted. On the actual day, we marched out with pride and glory, representing SJI and the National Police Cadet Corps With the near perfect precision of our drills and perseverance of our cadets, we proudly showed off our NPCC Crests in the evening sun. A cherished experience, it is definitely one that our cadets would await every year.

X-Challenge

For the year 2014, the SJI NPCC unit sent in 2 teams to compete in the inaugural X-Challenge competition. Teams are required to complete a series of exercises in the shortest time possible to be able to win. The preparation leading up to it was crucial as to ensure that both teams knew what to expect at the event. As it was a new event, no team had prior experience, making it anyone's game to take. Teams 1 and 2 went into the competition prepared and achieved admirable results. Teams 1 and 2 achieved a commendable 31st and 37th position respectively in a field of more than a hundred teams. Congratulations to the members of the team for putting up a respectable performance.

Campcraft Competition

The Campcraft Competition is a biennial event held by the Home Team Academy where all National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) Units island-wide compete against one another on a national level. To prepare ourselves for the competition, we had to undergo  an intensive and arduous Campcraft training regime that lasted over a period of 2 months in order to ensure that we were well prepared for the competition. During the competition, all units are required to complete and assemble a tent, flag-staff, and gadget in less than 10 minutes. SJI NPCC sent in 2 teams to compete in this competition. Teams 1 and 2 achieved a placement of 48th and 71st respectively. Although we were a little disappointed as we did not achieve what we hoped for, we still left with a meaningful experience that we would not forget, as well as the knowledge that we did our best.
